- Story Text:Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling delighted fans on Thursday (May 19) by signing autographs and taking selfies on the red carpet for the UK premiere of action comedy 'The Nice Guys'.
The buddy movie, which is written and directed by 'Lethal Weapon' maker Shane Black, follows enforcer-for-hire Jackson Healy (Crowe) and private detective Holland March (Gosling), who work together to solve why a girl named Amelia has gone missing and major names in the porn industry are dying in mysterious circumstances. The pair are helped in their search by March's daughter Holly, who is played by Australian up-and-comer Angourie Rice.
'The Nice Guys' is set during the 1970s - a period when, both the director and Crowe explained, Los Angeles had lost some of its classic Hollywood glamour.
"Yeah, I think it's a great time, you know. It really suits the story. Los Angeles itself had started to degrade a little bit, there wasn't the flashy Hollywood of times past. Hollywood Boulevard actually was all porn theatres and prostitutes. So, it's the perfect setting for two characters like the ones Ryan and I played," said Crowe.
Black added: "It was sort of a faded fairytale at that time. The Hollywood sign was falling down. You had smog, pollution, porn - all this promise, there was still this endgame destination for all the dreamers in America to get to the coast, but when they got there there was this sad little disappointment waiting. It was just this corrupted, modern day Sodom and Gomorrah of a place and you have these Biblical two guys, these knights in tarnished armour who have to step up and somehow navigate this landscape. I thought it's a detective movie, it's a fairytale. That's fun for me."
Gosling also spoke of his happiness to work with Black.
"Yeah, it was great fun this film. I grew up on Shane Black movies so it felt, it was like a coming home movie, coming home moment, to read his dialogue and get to be in one of his films," said the 35 year-old Canadian star.
'The Nice Guys' also stars Matt Bomer, Keith David and Oscar winner Kim Basinger.
The film is due to be released in the UK on June 3rd. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
