- Story Text:The richest chess tournament on the world circuit has began in Paris on Friday, November 8, with a 40,000ff (70,000 USD) first prize. Sixteen of the world's top players are competing in the Speed Chess Masters Tournament.
The 21-year-old Indian prodigy Viswanathan Anand, played at lighting speed and easily defeated 60-year-old Soviet emigre and former World Champion contender Victor Korchnoi. The knock-out formula of the competition gives the players 50 minutes for each game and Anand played well within his time for the victory. Anand will play Valery Salov, who crushed fellow Soviet Artur Yusupov, in the quarter-final on Sunday (November 10).
Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov struggled through two games to beat Britain's Jonathan Speelman. The world number two will face Dutchman Jan Timman, who earlier beat Gata Kamsky of the United States, in the next round.
World champion Gary Kasparov of the Soviet Union was beaten by Dutchman Jan Timman this afternoon (November 11) t win the 400,000 franc (71,500 dollar) first prize in the Paris speed chess masters tournament.
Kasparov had earlier in the day beaten fellow countryman Evgeny Barayev and Timman had beaten 21-year-old Indian prodigy Vishanathan Anand, refusing to be pressured by the young Indian's blitzkrieg tactics in the other semi-final. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
