- Story Text: Palestinians marked Nakba Day, the "day of catastrophe" on Sunday (May 15) with a siren, a painting event and a mock train to draw attention to the event.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, people stood still as a siren was sounded to commemorate the loss of Palestinian homes in the 1948 Middle East War which resulted in the creation of the state of Israel.
After the siren, residents re-enacted the movement of refugees, wearing traditional clothes and carrying suitcases and baskets on their bags.
In nearby Bethlehem, a demonstration led by a mock train made out of vehicles and carrying the names of lost Palestinian villages was met with Israeli stun and smoke grenades in the West Bank city's main street.
In Hebron, men and women staged an outdoor painting event, where men and women artists featured Palestinian displaced villages in their artwork.
In the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip, demonstrators marched with a huge Palestinian flag and a map of the Israel-Palestine area. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
