- Story Text: Full of long takes and static shots, the Romanian family reunion drama and Palme d'Or contender Sierranevada premiered in Cannes.
Director Cristi Puiu and actress Dana Dogaru walked the red carpet, posing for photographs along with Puiu's wife, Anca Puiu, who also produces the film.
The film, which runs to nearly three hours, chronicles the goings on at a memorial ceremony for a departed relative, with family secrets and animosities coming out as the story progresses.
It's not the first time for Puiu to be in Cannes, the 49 year old director won the festival's secondary competition, the Un Certain Regard in 2005, but Puiu said being nominated for the Palme d'Or was a privilege.
"It's like a gift when you are making a film you don't think of the Palme d'Or, you don't think of the Golden Bear, the Golden Lion or what have you, of Oscars, the problems you have to solve on the set are so very serious that everything that is related to film festivals is just a completely different planet," he said.
When asked if he was happy with the result, Puiu said he was satisfied overall but as a filmmaker there was always room for improvement."
"I mean every film that I'm making, it's another opportunity to correct what I did wrong in the previous film so there are steps, steps towards I don't know, we'll see the last film I'm going to make if it's gonna be something else than just another imperfect object."
Puiu said that this year he had no intention of reading any reviews of the film, describing the process as "painful".
"I'm going to keep a distance, it's very good to hear the people like it, it's very difficult to integrate the reasons why they like it. When you make a film. The same time you can be put in this situation that these people that didn't like it, they have something to say about it more than the people that like it," he said.
