- Story Text: Chilean students clashed with police on Wednesday (May 11) morning in Santiago, as students protest President Michelle Bachelet's educational reform plan, saying it hasn't gone far enough.
Police fired water and tear gas to try to disperse the students, some of whom responded by throwing stones and sticks and blocking the city's main avenue.
The Republic metro station was temporarily closed and an unconfirmed number of protesters were detained.
The protest was organised by the Chilean Students' Confederation (Confech) as Bachelet pushes through education reform in the South American country.
Her government is set to bolster teacher pay and conditions, bring public schools - now managed and financed by townships - under national jurisdiction and provide additional state funds for poor students.
These proposals formed the base of Bachelet's election promises, but they fall short of the free university for all that students have been demanding for years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
