- Story Text:Human rights activists, and relatives of missing people, have been demonstrating persistently in Buenos Aires. The regular weekly activity, known as the "Mothers' Protest", was forced away from the Plaza de Mayo -- the normal area for their demonstration -- on December 10 because of heavy police presence. Demonstrators were joined by members of human rights organisations who have been calling on the government for information about the people who disappeared during the so-called 'dirty war' in the last half of the 1970's. Estimates of the number of missing people vary between six and thirty thousand. The December 10 rally was a twenty-four-hour vigil in a week that has been marked by the worst civil unrest ever seen in Argentina. A general strike earlier in the week had paralysed the cities, and this vigil was followed by a huge political rally, which called for the introduction of general elections -- promised for late 1983 -- to be held immediately. The human rights demonstrators marched through the centre of Buenos Aires, shouting and chanting anti-military slogans. Although the police were out in force, the marchers dispersed peacefully.
