- Story Text:Iranian students in Manila demonstrated inside their embassy on Monday (11 August) in protest at the detention of thirteen student by Filipino police three days earlier. On Tuesday (12 August) forty Iranian students in India began a hunger strike outside their embassy in New Delhi.
SYNOPSIS: The Iranians arrested in Manila were part of a demonstration of 200 students marching in protest at alleged humans rights violations in the United Kingdom and America. The protestors were mainly metropolitan universities. Although the rally was, in the main, peaceful, thirteen were held on charges of illegal assembly.
Monday's demonstration was held inside the Iranian embassy in Manila. After a prayer meeting a student leader addressed the crowd calling for the release of imprisoned Iranians throughout the world. The thirteen students held in Manila are on hunger strike. Only three of those held have given their names to police. The other ten refused, following the example of arrested students in the United States and Britain.
The Iranians say that the original march, at which their leaders were arrested, was held to observe the last Friday of the Moslem festival of Ramadan. They maintain it was purely a religious observance. The students say that their previous rally had been savagely attacked by agents of the Filipino armed forces. They say the thirteen students being held will continue to fast indefinitely
The Iranian student made their points in a noisy demonstration inside the embassy building.
In New Delhi on Tuesday (12 August) about forty Iranian students began an indefinite hunger strike outside their country's embassy. The students say they want the ambassador to withdraw a letter he is alleged to have written asking the Indian Education Ministry not to issue Visas to those students who come to Indian as tourists with the intention of studying. Embassy officials have denied such a letter. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
