GV Cypriot delegate speaking 2.46 CHRISTOPHIODES: "No resolution of the United States or the United Nations has any purpose or meaning unless it is implemented. It would be a bad omen for the future of the United Nations indeed the international community as a whole if no concern is shown over the non-implementation of the resolutions of the General Assembly and of the (indistinct) and particularly of those unanimously adopted. It is on the basis of this fundamental premise that we call upon the General Assembly to affirm the faith in itself by safe, effective remedial action. Otherwise it will allow itself to be (indistinct) to ineffective resolutions. It is with this thought in mind that I have privilege to produce for this Assembly that resolution LS70769 and seek the support of all member states. By our resolution we are asking the ........ General Assembly to reaffirm its own resolution 212 endorsed by the Security Council in resolution 365 of 1974. I am certain that this Assembly will have no difficulty to reaffirm it having adopted it unanimously twelve months ago. We are also asking that the General Assembly should demand the immediate and effective utilisation of resolution 3218 to appear in unreduced terms in the light of the frustrating experience of the past year. The striking resemblance and parallels between the problems that are found in my country and those of Palestine and the Middle East are expectations that this Assembly might take a stand on this issue on the basis of principle and the relevant redemarcation in Cyprus by the foreign ministers of the Manolite countries encourages us to believe that the Assembly will accept our plea and demand and confirm that it will stand on this problem when needed and unconditionally withdraw all foreign troops from Cyprus and return all the refugees to their homes in safety by the restoration of their inalienable rights" EXTERIOR OF UN BUILDING: CYPRUS FOREIGN MINISTER JOHN CHRISTOPHIDES TALKING SYNOPSIS: In the General Assembly of the United Nations on Tuesday Cypriot Foreign Minister, John Christophides, introduced a resolution calling for immediate action in Cyprus.
