- Story Text:Sporadic rifle and machine-gun fire could still be heard in the streets of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday (15 April) as the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, continued his efforts to end fighting between Palestinian commandos and members of the right-wing Falangist group.
More than 90 people have been killed and over 15 injured since fighting between the two groups broke out on Sunday (13 April) night.
The Palestinians say the fighting started when a group of Falangists attacked a bus carrying Palestinians through the Beirut suburb of Ain Rumaneh, a Falangist stronghold. The Falangists say the Palestinians fired first.
The predominantly-Christian Falangists have for several years objected to the presence of Palestinian commando bases in Lebanon.
In Beirut on Tuesday, Mr. Riad, an Egyptian, met the Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr, Rashid Al Solh, and the Finance Minister, Mr. Kamal Khalid Junblatt, the leader of the progressive Socialist Party.
Mr. Riad also had talks with commando leaders and several Arab ambassadors.
He said it was the Lebanese Government's responsibility to find proper solutions to the conflict. His mission was to ensure the conflict did not deepen because of the advantage it would give to Israel.
Meanwhile, in the mountains just north of Beirut, members of the Falangist militia are continuing their training.
They have been carrying out exercises in the rough terrain with rifles and heavier equipment. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
