Southern California fans aren't exactly breaking down doors to see the new league, but they have proved women can play on an equal basis with men in a sport like volley-ball. Two women must be on the court at all times, and there can be as many as four spikers on the net. The volley balls are larger and softer, which is leading to longer and more exciting rallies. The key to success is the women...with names like Mary-Jill Pepper, Connia Gibbon, Eileen Clancy and Cathy Gregory. This five-team league should reach a respectable standard in its first year." PLAYER SPEAKS: "You, the public's already saturated with sports. But this one is unique, because it is women and men competing on the same level. So I really think that once it gets underway people will enjoy it. There are a lot more rallies in this game, and volley-ball can be very exciting and a fast-pace game. People like to watch fast-pace games. I've been on a lot of U.S. teams and I've been on a lot of U.S. teams and I've played on a lot of women's teams -- but to me this really makes me play much harder, and it's much more of a challenge." REPORTER: "Volley-ball is the second most popular sport around the world, for attendance and participation, ???V.A. supporters like record magnate Eric Gordio and movie producer Dave Alwolfer hope co-ed grows in the U.S. This is Greg Wyatt, in San Diego.
