Ski camps are springing up where complete beginners can be taught the basic art of the sport, and where the more adventurous can learn in relative safety the acrobatics involved in hot-dog skiing. They train at summer ski camps like this one, at South Lake Tahoe in California. Basics are taught on a ski-deck--a five-mile-an-hour treadmill that emphasises rhythm and balance. Then it's on to the mini-trampoline and tumbling areas, where students learn body control and work on varying degrees of flips. Freestylers emphasise they differ from hot-dogs because they know their limits and are careful not go beyond them. The instructors then tell their charges to go jump in the lake. There are varying degrees to the success. The school closes in October, when everyone leaves these balmy beaches for shivering sessions on snow-packed slopes--the true home of freestyle skiing.
