People are evacuated from houses along the riverbank. Some of the houses are half under water already. The number to been actuated goes as high as six thousand people in some estimates. Queanbeyan is built around the river bank. Most people were able to walk out. At the peak this evening the water level is expected to be eight feet higher than at present. A false report that the Googong dam upstream had broken caused momentary panic. Meanwhile in Canberra people are being evacuated from the causeway area. Police and rescue vehicles are standing by. The causeway is expected to go under it Lake Burley Griffin spills over a the flood peak. Some of the more fortunate were able to get removal vans to shift their possessions, but less fortunate people moved as best they could. The flood is the worst since 1974 and could even top that peak. Many local roads are closed by flooding away from the main streets.
