ANDERSON: "The patrols, which comprised about 35 men, led by a second lieutenant, these patrols were directed to areas where there were kraals and waited for any attack which we made on them so they could follow up.....which seemed to be the most effective way of having any contact with the guerrillas. At the same time they looked out for signs of guerrilla activity. They searched the kraals and usually managed to bring in some how suspects these people were I do not know; but right at the beginning of this operation, when these suspects were brought back into camp, I saw them being badly beaten with fists, with rifles, and burnt with cigarettes, their mouths filled with sand, and all this done by normal troops in front of senior officers." ANDERSON: "From the moment that the suspects were caught on patrol until they left to go to Odongwa -- as I say I don't know what happened to them there -- but the whole time, they were blindfolded, until a makeshift prison was built in the last couple of weeks. They were handcuffed to trees with just loincloths on and at this stage it was in the middle of winter in Namibia. And on occasions they were drenched with water at regular periods. It was very cold. What I did see while in this camp was two suspects being given water torture. This, after the first couple of weeks, started to take place in the afternoons for general entertainment of everyone and I say this because a lot of the troops used to gather around just because they had nothing better to do."
