GV Nairobi airport 0.38 4. CU William speaking Schaufele speaking 1.44 SCHAUFELE: "I am not aware that there have been any complaints about the possibility of Dr. Kissinger's visit to Africa. There have been some criticisms of his meeting with Mr. Vorster. So I'm not aware of those complaints. All I would say is, I think that eh, the leaders of...with whom we have been in contact, have welcomed and encouraged our efforts, hoping that they could succeed. Or at least contribute to a solution to the problems of southern Africa. Our efforts are directed towards a solution to these problems which will end the violence. Because the violence leads to not only increased dislocation in terms of the areas actually involved but also if it continues and escalates that is to invite outside intervention. And the United States is strongly opposed to outside intervention in Africa. We believe African problems should be solved by Africans." Mr. Schaufele did not say how long he intends staying in Kenya. But Reuters - quoting Kenyan sources - said it is believed he would await the arrival of Dr. Kissinger, next Tuesday (14 September). Initials OS/2200 Script is copyright Reuters Limited.
