Having brought down the centre-left government early in the new year, the Socialists paved the way for a minority Christian Democrat administration five weeks later by promising to abstain in parliamentary votes. Party leader Francisco de Martino, delivering the keynote address at the conference, ruled out any alliance between his party and the powerful Italian communists. In a 90-page speech, Signor de Martino said he believed the party's best interests would be served by seeking a new form of co-operation with the long-dominant Christian Democrat Party. He was replaying to a call by his party's rank and file which is pressing for a leftist alternative to 25 years of Christian Democrat rule.
