- Story Text:The 54th ceasefire attempt in the Lebanese civil war appeared to be faring little better than the earlier attempts on Thursday (5 August) night. An officer of the Arab League peace keeping force reported fighting in the east Beirut Moslem enclave of Nabaa, as well as at the Tel Al-Zaater Palestinian refugee camp nearby.
SYNOPSIS: The right-wing attempt to take the Palestinian camp of Tel Al-Zaatar has been going on for two months, but perhaps a greater threat to the new ceasefire is posed by this rightist advance into the neighbouring Moslem enclave of Nabaa on Thursday. The Falangists and their Christian allies have long wanted to remove this Moslem obstacle to their complete control of east Beirut.
Right-wing gunmen appeared to be in control of the area during the day and Falangist leader the day and Falangist leader Amin Gemayel announced the capture of Nabaa at a press conference. He said up to 3,500 civilians and about 800 fighters remained in Nabaa. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
