I am both honoured and deeply moved by the unanimous decision of the General Assembly to elect me for another term as Secretary-General of this organisation. I now take this occasion to reaffirm my oaths of office. I solemnly swear to exercise in all loyalty discretion and conscience the functions entrusted to me as Secretary-General of United Nations, to discharge these functions and regulate my conduct with the interest of the United Nations only in view, and not to seek or accept instructions in regard to the performance of my duty from any government or other authority external to this organization. Mr. President, distinguished members of the General Assembly. I am confident not with standing all the many difficulties which face us that we can indeed we must unite our strength in order to achieve peace and a better future for all the peoples on this earth.
