TESSEMA SPEAKING AT CONFERENCE. Africa Hall in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, where the president of the African Football Confederation, Mr. Ato Yidnekachew Tessema, spoke out against too many international football competitions at a news conference on Friday. Mr. Tessema said that as far as zone competitions were concerned, the Confederation encouraged them, but thought they were a danger to football in individual countries. He said African countries were already obliged to participate in many international matches including the Champions Cup, the African National Cup, the preliminary tournament of the World Cup and the Olympic football tournament. Mr. Tessema, who is the Ethiopian Commissioner for Sport and Physical Training, was recently re-elected as president of the Confederation for another four year term. He said he believed that for a country where football was still played by amateurs, too many international competitions would oblige national associations to postpone local competitions. This would be to the detriment of younger players. Mr. Tessema said he didn't want competitions organised just for the sake of holding them.
