SVs Car's engine in operation and wheels revolving on road rollers (2 shots) 1.52 "This car was modified at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, to operate leaner - that is with greater amounts of air, which reduces the engine's combustion temperature. This particular test car stores hydrogen in the bottles in the trunk from where it's fed by lines to the engine. The latest version has a generator located in the engine compartment to produce the hydrogen required, directly from the car's gasoline. The joint NASA-Energy Research and Development Administration project is aimed at having a test car built by one of the big three automobile manufacturers in late 1978. All of the government research data will be turned over to the auto industry so that they can evaluate the commercial potential of the hydrogen-enriched fuels concept for future use in mass-produced cars. The research has shown that hydrogen enrichment, in addition to the improving of fuel economy can meet the toughest emission standards proposed for new cars. Putting the concept into effect is a near term possibility, and can be done without designing a new engine. It would also be relatively inexpensive to mass produce, and has the potential for use with non-petroleum fuels. Hydrogen-enriched engines - a new fuel system for automobiles that appears to significantly reduce pollution emissions while increasing engine efficiency and fuel economy."
