- Title: UNITED NATIONS: SECURITY COUNCIL BEGINS REVIEW OF MIDDLE EAST SITUATION.
- Date: 7th June 1973
- Summary: 1. GTV U.N. Security Council 0.08 2. STV Zayyat 0.13 3. SCU Zayyat speaking 1.20 4. GTV Security Council 1.25 5. STV Tekoah speaking 2.21 ZAYYAT: "Mr. President, we have continually announced our readiness to continue Ambassador Jarring's talks with a view to achieving a just and lasting peace. The price however was not--shall not be the betrayal of our territorial integrity or the abandonment of the inalienable rights of the Palestinians as a nation to live in peace within recognised and secure boundaries. We remain loyal to the international order which this organisation represents and is meant to defend. It is however our responsibility, which our charter sanctions, to try our best to repel aggression and to end the occupation of our homeland by every available means." TEKOAH: "We take note of the statement made by the Foreign Minister of Egypt that Egypt accepts direct negotiations with Israel without prior conditions. Much that Minister Zayyat said after that destroyed the significance of this declaration and turned it into another seemingly polemical argument. Yet this is a challenge to which it must respond. This is the hour for the Security Council to call on the parties to enter into direct negotiations without any pre-conditions." Initials BB/0105 CG/BOB/BB/0110 Script is copyright Reuters Limited.
