- Story Text:The marathon ferry hijacking in Singapore harbour entered its fifth day with no apparent sign of a break in the deadlock between four armed guerillas and the Singapore government over how to get them out of the country.
The hijackers, who are holding three crew hostages aboard the inter-island ferry "Laju", rejected the Singapore government's offer on Sunday (3 February) to fuel the boat and let them sail to international waters. The hijackers indicated that they would still prefer to fly out of Singapore to a yet unspecified Arab country.
A government spokesman on Sunday told a press conference that the problem still remained of finding an aircraft to take the hijackers away and an Arab country willing to accepted them. The guerillas themselves have already rejected Damascus, Aden and Baghdad, but have not said why.
The guerillas have issued no ultimatums over the weekend. With daily supplies of food, cigarettes and newspapers, they seem content to wait for better term.
The guerillas -- believed to be two Japanese and two Arabs -- hijacked the ferry-boat after failing to blow up Shell oil storage tanks on an offshore island. One civilian was injured in the incident.
Singapore police have issued a nationwide alert over the weekend. Tight security at the airport was introduced to prevent any terrorist reprisals against the Singapore government over the hijacking.
The four armed hijackers have claimed to be members of the Japanese Red Army and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
