It's the same as moto-cross except a Stingray bike is used instead of a motorcycle. The San Diego race is the third leg in the triple crown of moto-biking. While costs are skyrocketing in the other kids' sports like baseball and football, motorbikers need very little equipment, just a love for skids, slaloms, banks and water jumps. The bikers have to pedal their way around a quarter-mile course. Youngsters from seven to sixteen compete in three classes, and they have to use plenty of pedal-power to win. Another positive aspect of the sport is; nobody sits on the bench. Meet director Stephen Poytel feels this sport is better for kids than the established team-sports. POYTEL: "The thing that excites most people about it is that it's individuals and their machines competing against other individuals and the elements that are involved in a race-track of this type a lot more competitive urge on the part of the participants and I could foresee something like this developing into a national championship by late next year." REPORTER: The sport is developing so rapidly here, many bikemakers are now coming out with special equipment. Racing suspensions and shock-absorbers are now invading the world of the seven-year-old. This is Greg Wyatt in San Diego. Initials OS/2322 OS/2345 SPORT: CYCLING A transcript of the commentary appears on the second page. Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved
