One woman said she had been raped thirty years ago. If she caught the buy right now she would kill him." REPORTER BRIGGS: The trial of Mrs. Inez Garcia didn't begin as a cause, but it seems to have ended as one. She was accused of second-degree murder for shooting the companion of a man who she said raped her lest spring. But her lawyer, Charles Garry, was never able to have the rape incident fully explored in the trial. During the trial, Mrs. Garcia said that about seventeen minutes after the alleged rape she went home, got a .22 rifle and went gunning for the rapist and his friend. She only found the friend and told the court: "I killed the son of a bitch and I wish I had killed the other." The defence said she was under great strain and called it self defence even though it happened after the rape. But the jury convicted, and today Mrs. Garcia was sentenced five years to life. Judge Stanley Lawson said he wanted to tell thousands of women who signed petitions supporting Mrs. Garcia: "This is a government of laws, not men. Man of those women didn't agree. BRIGGS:"They felt the defence should have been allowd to show how rape can traumatise women."
