- Title: UNITED NATIONS: PAKISTANI AMBASSADOR SAYS HE CANNOT SEE HUSBANDS KEEPING HOUSE AS SPEAKERS ADDRESS WOMEN'S LIBERATION RALLY IN UN LOBBY.
- Date: 10th December 1975
- Summary: 1. SV Pakistan's Akhund speaking (3 shots) as lady President listens 0.56 2. SV Angie Brooks at rally 1.23 PAKISTANI AMBASSADOR AKHUND SPEAKING: ANGIE BROOKS AT RALLY. "I think it is not the women who are sedentary it's the man who are sedentary, they won't go back all over the world to their wives its their wives we are coming back to but that's because of social structure. I frankly don't see that that's going to change very much. I don't see husbands dropping everything and simply going out of their way to keep house. The problem isn't, the problem isn't who are they going to call on - but what are they going to do the rest of the day. It just isn't feasible somehow but this ... the important thing is, are there any, are there any rules and regulations and laws which prevent women from playing a role. I was rather surprised when I read the papers that you were good enough to send me in connection with this meeting that there were indeed in the Secretariat until recently certain rules and regulations which discriminate against women but now that's on old story." "I want to congratulate those women who have organised this rally today to give free expression on what we feel that article eight of the charter has not been implemented as far as the political rights for women. I hope that this will not be the end, it will just be the beginning and that women will continue to struggle and haul together for united we will be able to succeed but if we are divided we will not be able to succeed."
