Britain's trade with Black Africa 12 months ago was double her trade with South Africa. France's trade with Black Africa in recent years has been 23 times her trade with South Africa. Investment trends are tending more and more to take care of the needs of Black Africa. We are becoming an economic factor. So I cannot understand some of the people who still insist that South Africa and Southern Rhodesia are so valuable to them that they can ignore us altogether. If we continue to exert ourselves in the economic field we will expose, shall I say, the falsity of this kind of approach, and this is why in the economic sense, I would like to emphasise in keeping with the Charter of the United Nations, that to do right we must be strong, and to be strong we must develop our economic capabilities."
