- Title: UK: SPOKESMAN FOR ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS COMMENTS ON YARRA BRIDGE COLLAPSE
- Date: 15th October 1970
- Summary: 1. GV Milford Haven bridge after collapse (4 shots) 0.18 2. SV Spokesman 1.30 TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 6: REPORTER: "Method of construction is sage? SPOKESMAN: Yes, we have no doubts about that. REPORTER: But you see there have been now two bridges that have collapsed which have been under construction in this way. SPOKESMAN: The circumstances of the failure at Yarra are totally different from those at Milford Haven. With the information we now have from Australia we don't see any connection between the two collapses. REPORTER: Without getting too technical, in which ways are the circumstances totally different. SPOKESMAN: The Yarra work had only advanced a very short distance, a small distance. There was only one main span erected on both banks, and the conditions had not developed into the situation that existed at the time of the earlier collapse. REPORTER: But how far had the deck of the bridge progressed before beyond the last supporting pillar? SPOKESMAN: The Yarra, none.
