- Story Text:The day after his inauguration as the new President of Chile, Dr. Salvador Allende, reviewed the traditional parade for a new Head of State, in Santiago. Dr. Allende is Latin America's first freely-elected Marxist Head of State.
Dr. Allende took the office of president with the approval of the Chilean congress and the blessing of the country's religious leaders. He called upon the people for "work and sacrifice" to carry forward a programme he described as the start of the "construction of Socialism" in Chile.
After a day of ceremonies Allende received many foreign delegations, including a representative of President Nixon and missions from several Communist countries, including North Vietnam, the Peoples Republic of China, and Cuba.....countries with which Chile does not now have formal relations.
Dr. Allende, a Freemason, attended an ecumenical service of thanksgiving at Santiago's Roman Catholic Cathedral, where he received a collective blessing led by Raul Cardinal Silva Enriquez, Archbishop of Santiago. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
