HOLLAND: ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER ABBA EBAN TALKS TO REPORTERS ABOUT MIDDLE EAST SITUATION
- Title: HOLLAND: ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER ABBA EBAN TALKS TO REPORTERS ABOUT MIDDLE EAST SITUATION
- Date: 18th February 1970
- Summary: Press conference; Mr. Eban speaking. TRANSCRIPT: EBAN: "No, that's not a proposal of the Israeli Cabinet, that's a proposal of the world press or parts of the world press. There's no such thing as a unilateral ceasefire, unless you mean suicide, which is not our plan. We think of a reciprocal ceasefire, in other words, if there is international action to restore to full effectiveness the ceasefire which existed between ourselves and the United Arab Republic for most of the two and a half years, then as our Prime Minister stated on the 12th of January, and I think she will restate this very soon again, if the U.A.R. will indicate that it is willing to re-establish the ceasefire -- when they've stopped firing we will stop firing. But I don't know how the word unilateral got in -- reciprocal is the word." REPORTER: "QUESTION', INDISTINCT)" EBAN: "The proposals that we made concerning arms for Israel concerned the basic problem of the balance of power and however tense the situation it would become much worse if that balance were to be disturbed. As regards the incidents of war the best way to stop them is by stopping all of them, by having a ceasefire, in which case there would be no action either by their artillery or by our air force or by their raiders or by our reaction. I think the establishment on the... but I have no reason at all to think that the process of consideration going on in the United States has been effected by the fact that the ceasefire is in its present condition in fact the United States I think agrees with us that there ought to be a restoration of the ceasefire."
