- Story Text:Security precautions to protect foreign diplomats in Rio De Janeiro have been heavily boosted following the kidnapping of West German Ambassador, Ehreinfried Von Holleben - the latest in a rash of such snatches which has blossomed in Latin America since last year.
Even as the 40 political prisoners (whose liberation was demanded by the kidnappers in exchange for the diplomat's release) left Rio De Janeiro for Algiers today (June 15), police and plane-clothes officers mounted special security arrangements to protect Rio's Diplomatic Community.
The police continued to investigate Herr Von Holleben's abduction, which happened on the night of Thursday, June 11, even through the diplomat is expected to be released shortly after the released prisoners arrive in Algiers. Algeria has agreed to give them asylum. It is reported that Algeria is ready to accept "all people fighting for their freedom".
On the nights of the kidnapping, the sequence of events leading to Von Holleben's kidnapping began when terrorists shot out a street lamp. Then they blocked the road along which the Ambassador's Mercedes, and its Volkswagen escort were travelling, and then sped the diplomat to an unknown hiding place.
One guard was killed - two others seriously injured.
Despite a massive police hunt no trace of Von Holleben has been found. Subsequently the Brazilian Government decided to comply with the kidnappers' demands and released the 40 prisoners.
This terrorist victory has resulted in the vast upsurge of security precautions surrounding other foreign representatives and their families.
Guards at Embassies and Legations have been considerably increased, and police motor escorts are to be seven whenever a diplomatic car appears. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
