JORDAN: KING HUSSEIN REITERATES DEMAND FOR ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL FROM OCCUPIED TERRITORY
- Title: JORDAN: KING HUSSEIN REITERATES DEMAND FOR ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL FROM OCCUPIED TERRITORY
- Date: 13th August 1970
- Summary: 1. SV Hussein seated with interviewer. 0.05 2. CU Hussein interviewed 1.57 TRANSCRIPT: HUSSEIN: "There are basically two positions, two objectives, as far as we are concerned. One, the liberation of all our occupied territories occupied in June of 1967. The Second, the recognition of the rights of the Palestinians to self determination, the right recognised so may time by the United Nations in the past. More than that, I don't think it is prudent or constructive to state specific positions at this stage." QUESTION: "Many people outside your country seem to believe that one of the main obstacles towards peace are the Commandos, the Fedayeen living in this country. They've said that they'll fight on, whatever you do." HUSSEIN: "I believe that the people of Jordan--the occupied territory and here--have exercised their right to resist aggression and to resist occupation. And they'll continue to do so, so long as there is occupation, so long as there is no positive progress towards the establishment of a just and durable peace which is the objective of all. I've always said that when we have that alternative, I believe presenting it to our people would cause the overwhelming majority to (INDISTINCT) that is what Fedayeen seek." QUESTION: "But the minority do seem to be well armed and determined. That's what I've seen from my short stay in your country." HUSSEIN: "I don't believe anybody fights just for the sake of fighting or is interested in doing so. It is only the lack of progress towards and end that has caused this to happen during the past period. Nothing has changed basically. Right now there is new initiative and there is some hope, but a great deal depends on what happens from now on." Initials CP/PW/BB Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved
