- Story Text:A planned parenthood organisation is helping women wanting abortions in New York -- where laws governing the termination of pregnancy are the most liberal in the United States.
The advice service gets about 300 calls a day from women who don't want to have their babies. The change in the law that led to this situation came after prolonged debate in the State Legislature. The politicians and medical interests wanted to stamp out back street abortionists and an informal code requires that the operations take place in hospital or affiliated organisations.
Now the code may be passed into law to prevent abuses to the liberal abortion system.
At Mt Sinai, a private hospital in New York, about 30 abortions are performed weekly. The cost is about 200 dollars, but elsewhere in the State it could be a lot more if special conditions and extra medical services are wanted.
Throughout the State nearly 1,000 abortions are performed weekly -- and so far the scheme seems to have sharply reduced the number of back street operations, and the deaths that result. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
