I've never seen the generosity, the heartwarming response to the call as anything like this for a plea for help. I've received calls from New York, St. Louis, Rockfort, Elgin -- college students call me. They woke up a fraternity house to find out how many ABs they have, and unfortunately, with the phones going in here, we were unable to find out where they were from, but we do know they were about 110 miles away and they wanted to drive in. I've had people call from New York, they wanted to come in by plane -- I don't know their name either. It's been the most fantastic thing I have seen. The response has staggered us -- staggers the imagination. I've never seen anything like it." Initials AH/AW/LMC AH/AW Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved

- Story Text:Two Chicago policemen were injured during a four-hour clash with a gang of snipers in the early hours of Friday morning. Blood donors from as far as New York and St. Louis answered an emergency call to help one of the policemen, critically wounded after being shot in the back.
The policemen were on patrol in a gang intelligence squad car when they came under sniper fire. The shooting happened near a hotel which closed down earlier in August after allegedly being taken over by the Black P. Stone Nation gang -- a coalition of about 50 street gangs.
Police immediately launched a massive hunt after sealing off the black ghetto area. Armed squads with tracker dogs, aided by a police helicopter, combed buildings as the sporadic sniper fire continued. At least 20 people were arrested.
Meanwhile, appeals for rare A.B. Positive blood went out to aid Detective James Alfano -- who was given more than 80 pints of blood after being shot in the back. Sgt. Mattew Duro, of the police medical unit, described the response to the appeal as fantastic.
As a result of the appeal, more than 200 pints of blood were donated. The other wounded policeman was allowed home after hospital treatment for gunshot wound in the arm.
This latest snipping attack came almost four weeks after two Chicago policemen were cut down and killed by sniper fire as they patrolled a predominantly black housing project in the city. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
