- Story Text:More than a thousand students marched on the Spanish consulate in Santiago, Chile, Tuesday (29 December) to protest the trial of 15 Basque nationalists in Burgos.
The students began organizing soon after hearing radio announcements that six of the defendants had been sentenced to death by a military tribunal in Burgos. A group of several hundred gathered outside the National Students Federation Headquarters and then set off to the consulate. They were joined by other student groups as they marched through the city's canter along Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue. The demonstrators carried banners with slogans in support of the Basques and denouncing General Franco.
After listening to speeches by demonstration leaders outside the consulate, several students wrote slogans on the consulate's walls and a dozen others threw stones at the building. Most of the consulate's windows were broken but there was no major damage. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
