ZAMBIA: ON THE EVE OF THE NON-ALIGNED NATIONS CONFERENCE IN LUSAKA, PRESIDENT KAUNDA DISCUSSED SOME ISSUES
- Title: ZAMBIA: ON THE EVE OF THE NON-ALIGNED NATIONS CONFERENCE IN LUSAKA, PRESIDENT KAUNDA DISCUSSED SOME ISSUES
- Date: 31st August 1970
- Summary: 1. LV Kaunda walking with journalists in the grounds of his holiday lodge at Mfuwe 0.21 2. CU Kaunda seated for interview 4.16 TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: KAUNDA: "I share the views of our Foreign Ministers, because to begin with, I myself have been saying something similar to African ambassadors in New York as far back as 1966. I said then that when we in Africa stand divided, we can never hope to do anything on our own economically, or even politically for that matter. And that there is much more which could be done if we pooled our resources. What we lack in Zambia others may have in other countries. This was my theme. I would say that it is possible for us to enlarge or cover a wider area such as is covered by the representatives of the non-aligned countries to a great extent, because the same principle applies. If we can work out methods of co-operation between our various countries, then I don't see any reason why non-aligned countries could not achieve more by sharing their common resources, whether human or material, then they would be looking forward to help from more developed countries which in any case would have more strings, then I hope there would be between non-aligned nations. In terms of regional co-operation, again this is a logical follow-up. If you establish co-operation between East and Central Africa, you establish co-operation between India and other countries in that area, you establish co-operation between Yugoslavia and other countries which are non-aligned in say, the northern parts of Africa. I see no reason why in the end you should not have a sort of umbrella, which helps you to co-ordinate the aid then between all the nations involved in this. So I think our foreign Ministers were realistic. I agree with them." REPORTER: "Mr President, Zambia borders not only with independent African countries, but also with racial, and colonial regimes. What do you think Mr President, that non-aligned countries can do to eliminate these anachronisms, and not only anachronisms but dangers to peace, and how they can assist other people fighting for their independence against the remains of colonialism and the minority racial regimes?" KAUNDA: "It is true as you say that we share common borders with these racialist regimes. I believe that again I must leave this to the leaders who will be assembling in Lusaka fairly soon. However, it can be said that a good number of the non-aligned countries have already been contributing to liberation movements in this part of the world. What is required I think is for them to pool their resources, and see what this would mean to the whole liberation movements in this part of the world. How again they should do this, I would hesitate to voice my opinion, as leader of a host country. It would be unfair for me to say to our leaders what they should do or not do. So I for that reason alone, I would say it is better to contribute within the conference rather than before our leaders arrive. This is the problem I have. I hope you can see my point of view."
