SOUTH AFRICA: ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY OUTLINES HIS OPPOSITION TO ARMS SALES TO SOUTH AFRICA.
- Title: SOUTH AFRICA: ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY OUTLINES HIS OPPOSITION TO ARMS SALES TO SOUTH AFRICA.
- Date: 13th November 1970
- Summary: 1. SV Archbishop with wife and reporter. 0.13 2. CU Archbishop 1.17 TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 2: RAMSEY: My view is this -- in common with many fellow churchmen, including some with considerable knowledge of Africa, I think that Africans in many countries inevitably regard the sale of arms as a kind of symbolic gesture of upholding the South African regime. And I believe that the effect of that may be to incline Africans in a lot of countries not towards Christianity, but towards Communism and Islam. And There's a considerable amount of very well informed missionary opinion in African countries who share this view. In other words it may help the very things we don't want to help.
