- Title: USA: DEFENCE SECRETARY LAIRD WARNS THAT BOMBING OF NORTH VIETNAM COULD START AGAIN
- Date: 3rd May 1970
- Summary: 1. GV Capitol building 0.06 2. CU Laird speaking 1.59 TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 2) LAIRD: "The question which I was asked had to do with air activity and I would recommend if the so-called understanding is broken and the DMZ is used as a major infiltration route that air power be used against the North. In the operation in the so-called "Fish Hook" area we have sued US tactical air and we have also used B52s. In the Parrot's Beak area as of this morning all of the tactical air that's been used in there have been tactical air supplied by the forces of South Vietnam." QUESTION: "What about the other three though?" LAIRD: "The other three areas are subject to the use of air power but as far as our sanctuary attacks announced by the President we have limited the activity almost entirely to the two areas that we operating in jointly with South Vietnamese at this time." QUESTION: "But we are hitting the other three areas (indistinct)." LAIRD: "Yes. As we withdraw Americans from South Vietnam, as the South Vietnamese forces become stronger, we are determined that those americans that remain South Vietnam will not be sitting ducks for the enemy that can hide on a hit and run basis in the sanctuary areas of Cambodia. This becomes more and more important during the next six months because this is a very crucial period." Initials SAW/N-TELE/PW/PS Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved
