Summary:Malta's independence celebrations were rather a stormy affair. The Maltese Labour Party did not approve of the new constitution negotiated with Britain by the Nationalist Party Government. In spite of a week's ban on demonstrations it made its disapproval clear. The Labour Leader Mr Dom Mint off was carried shoulder high by his supporters. None the less, there was an enthusiastic welcome for Prince Philip, who represented Queen Elizabeth.
