Summary:Georgetown, Guyana, December 15 1964. Forbes Burnham was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of the country in succession to Dr. Cheddi Jagan. Burnham had just won a general election, surprisingly beating the charismatic Jagan. The vote had been preceded by violent rioting caused by racial hatred between Guyana's black and Indian communities. Britain had 1,300 troops stationed there to keep order.
