- Story Text: Since its creation on the eve of August 14, 1947, Pakistan has had a tumultuous history; from battles against neighbouring India and domestic militant groups, to corruption allegations among its political elite.
On July 25, the country will head to the polls. The top contenders in the elections are the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif who faces a lengthy prison sentence, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI, or Pakistan Justice Movement) of former cricket star Imran Khan and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of assassinated prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
With the return and subsequent arrest of Sharif on Friday (July 13), tension is mounting, and as campaigning intensifies, attacks in different areas of the country have stoked fear of more violence in the Muslim country of 208 million where political rallies can draw tens of thousands of people.
Pakistan's army will deploy about 371,000 troops on election day, almost three times the number in 2013, to protect the polling facilities. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
