IMPEACHMENT BILL OF PRESIDENT (PARK GEUN-HYE)" VARIOUS OF LAWMAKERS PUTTING THEIR BALLOT PAPERS INTO BALLOT BOX South Korean lawmakers on December 9 voted overwhelmingly to impeach Park Geun-hye over the influence-peddling scandal, setting the stage for her to become the country's first elected leader to be pushed from office in disgrace. Members of parliament voted by secret ballot with 234 in favour and 56 opposed, meaning dozens of members of Park's own conservative Saenuri Party backed the motion to remove her. - Story Text: South Korean court is set to announce on Friday (July 20) the verdict and sentence for former President Park Geun-hye over charges relating to spy agency bribery and election meddling.
Park became South Korea's first democratically elected leader to be forced from office last year when the Constitutional Court ordered her out over a scandal that landed the heads of two conglomerates in jail and exposed webs of corruption between political leaders and the country's conglomerates.
In April, the court jailed Park for 24 years and also fined her 18 billion won ($16.9 million) after finding her guilty of charges including bribery, abuse of power and coercion.
Born on February 2, 1952, Park was elected to office as the first female president in 2012.
Park, 66, has denied wrongdoing and has not attended trials since last October. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
