- Story Text: Ukraine's traditional dress fans were given a special treat during this year's fashion week in Kiev as vintage folk costumes - some over a hundred years old - were presented during one of the shows.
The display was a part of a cultural project called "Vytoky" - The Roots - and is aimed at showing the public traditional Ukrainian clothes from various regions of the country. The project organisers and participants say they consider fashion an important element of national identity.
"Costume plays a big role indeed, it creates a spirit of the 19th century. I personally today feel myself a real Ukrainian girl in this costume," said a model and the show participant Katya Kokhanova.
Twenty vintage Ukrainian dresses and costumes borrowed from museums and private collections and dating back to 19th-20th centuries were put on display during the show. Some of the items were typical for certain regions of Ukraine and could not be seen elsewhere.
"Here we can see fashion typical for (Ukraine's) Chernihiv region which is called "a skirt with a breast collar". It is a skirt with embroidery and a jacket which is sewed to the skirt. There was no such thing as "sarafan" in Ukraine, that is why it was called a skirt with a breast collar," said Lyudmila, the stylist at the show.
For some models wearing traditional vintage dresses was a new and interesting experience, others, like Yaroslav, have already been familiar with the country's folk fashion.
"I live in this style and fashion. It is not the first time I see ethnic costume. It is very dear to me, that is why I feel comfortable in it," said a show participant Yaroslav wearing a straw hat and embroidered shirt.
The vintage dress collection displayed at Kiev fashion week included fifteen female and five male costumes belonging to various Ukraine's regions and historical epochs.
The collection included old expensive jewelry and accessories as wealthy Ukrainians in the past loved to order those from abroad, mostly from Austria.
"I am proud that we (Ukrainians) were elegant and luxurious. I would like to bring this aesthetics back. It is very pleasant to see that people are impressed by it. I can see that we deliver the message," said "Vytoky" project curator Mariya Kvitka.
The project organisers hope that the show will inspire local designers and public to pay more attention to traditional Ukrainian fashion and use its elements in their work and daily life. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
