- Story Text: Tourists from around the world gathered outside Kensington Palace, the official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Buckingham Palace on Sunday (May 3), the morning after the birth of a new royal princess.
Soon afterwards, the Duchess's sister and mother - Pippa and Carole Middleton - arrived to meet the latest addition to the family.
A solitary balloon was attached to the golden gates of Kensington Palace, while tourists posed for photographs and hoped to catch a glimpse of Kate and her husband, Prince William, who had spent their first night with their new daughter inside.
The royal family's newest member was born at 8:34 a.m. on Saturday (May 2), some 2-1/2 hours after Kate Middleton was admitted in the early stages of labour to St Mary's Hospital, West London.
The couple emerged later the same day with the baby wrapped in a white woollen shawl and bonnet to pose for photographs on the steps of the hospital, a little over 12 hours after Kate arrived.
Outside their official residence, Ellen Wallover, an American tourist visiting Britain from New Jersey, told Reuters that she was excited by the newest royal arrival.
"We thought it was a little early for Kate to come out of the hospital and she looked beautiful and little George is adorable, and it was very exciting," she said.
At the queen's residence, Buckingham Palace, throngs of tourists watched the traditional changing of the guard ceremony as a royal band marched through the gates.
German tourists, Jenny and Jean Schleinitz, had come to visit the palace to see what all the commotion was about.
"We followed it through the whole time and also when we were travelling. As I said, my mum's birthday is tomorrow, so we were thinking maybe it will be tomorrow, but we are also happy that it was yesterday," said Jenny.
"A new baby is always good, for everyone I think. And here you have a girl (and) a boy, it's a nice-looking couple, nice to look at, they are a beautiful family. There you are," said French tourist French tourist Florence Saint Macary.
The baby princess, who is yet to be named, will be fourth in line to the throne behind her brother Prince George, father William and grandfather Prince Charles, pushing her uncle Prince Harry down a place in the royal hierarchy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
