- Story Text: Britain's Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge named their newborn daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana on Monday (May 4), a choice that honours three of the baby's relatives.
The news, announced in a statement on Monday from the couple's Kensington Palace residence, was eagerly awaited by royal watchers and bookmakers who had been placing bets and speculating on the subject since the baby's birth on Saturday.
While Elizabeth honours Queen Elizabeth II and Diana honours Prince William's late mother Princess Diana, Charlotte is the female version of Charles.
"It's got a lot of royal connections, most importantly it's Charles. He said he wanted a grand-daughter, now he has a grand-daughter and she is named the feminine version of Charles, that's Charlotte," said royal historian Kate Williams.
Charlotte, Diana and Elizabeth were all among the names most favoured by bookmakers for the princess, who is the fifth great-grandchild of Britain's 89-year-old Queen Elizabeth.
Charlotte, fourth in line to the British throne behind her brother Prince George, father William and grandfather Prince Charles, was born on Saturday morning (May 2) in a London hospital. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
