- Story Text: Indonesian officials rescued a female orangutan aged three to four years, late on Saturday (October 17) after its habitat was burned down by raging forest fires in Kalimantan.
"She ran from the woods because the border of her habitat and the plantation has already been burnt down -- an area of about 20 hectares. That area is a conservation forest which has been burnt completely," said Yusuf Trismanto, head of central Kalimantan Conservation and Natural Resources Agency (BKSDA) who is working together with an orangutan conservation NGO to help the primates.
"We managed to rescue a female orangutan baby, age ranging between three to four years old. This is the third orangutan to be rescued by BKSDA and handed to us (BOSF) for rehabilitation," said Monterado Fridman, communication coordinator of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) Nyaru Menteng.
Kalimantan and Sumatra island, in west Indonesia, are the worst affected areas by forest fires caused by slash-and-burn land clearing practices.
Experts stress that Indonesia, home to the world's third-largest tropical forest acreage, holds the key to the problem and needs to put into practice a long-term plan to enforce laws, tackle the fires and spend more on prevention.
The haze caused by the burning has shrouded neighbouring countries Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand in recent weeks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
