- Story Text: Johannesburg's city centre was brought to a standstill on Thursday (October 22) as protesting students marched to the African National Congress' headquarters in protest against a hike in tuition fees.
Thousands of students from the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg marched through South Africa's commercial capital and gathered outside Luthuli House, the ANC headquarters, to hand their list of demands.
ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe came out to greet the protesters, who declined to be addressed by him. He later told reporters that the ANC would look to introducing free education, without elaborating.
Some protesters bore placards with slogans reading "Free education, tax the rich".
The students also demanded an end to outsourcing of cleaning and security staff on campus and the changing of building names.
The protests, which have sometimes turned violent, are set to go on indefinitely until student demands are met. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
