- Story Text: The Spanish ship Rio Segura working under the European Union's Operation Triton brought 523 migrants safely into port in Pozzallo on the southern coast of Sicily on Wednesday (October 7).
The migrants were some of the 928 migrants rescued on Tuesday (October 6) in eight separate rescue operations off the Libyan coast, coordinated by the Coast Guard office in Rome.
The Spanish ship intercepted three dinghies in trouble containing 325 people and also took on board migrants rescued from some coast guard vessels.
Emergency workers waited for them on the quayside to perform medical checks and distribute food and water.
The migrants were then shipped to reception centres where identification procedures would be completed and where they could start the process of applying for political asylum.
More than half a million people have arrived into Europe this year fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, prompting bitter disputes between European Union member states about how to react and how to share out the responsibility.
The most treacherous journey is from Libya to Italy where according to the International Organization of Migration nearly 3,000 people have died making the attempt.
Refugees and migrants arriving in Greece and Italy have been heading north across the continent to reach more affluent nations such as Germany, triggering disputes between governments in central and eastern Europe as they alternately try to block the flow or share the burden with their neighbours.
Italy will begin relocating refugees later this week under a European Union plan that aims to spread the burden of the continent's biggest migrant crisis since World War Two.
The EU plans to relocate a total of 160,000 migrants, mostly Syrians and Eritreans, from the frontline countries of Greece and Italy to other member states in the 28-nation bloc. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
