  • Story Text: The White House on Friday (July 10) said Office of Personnel Management chief Katherine Archuleta offered her resignation of her own volition after recent massive computer hacks.
    White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at a briefing the president thought it was "quite clear" that new leadership was needed.
    "Director Archuleta did offer her resignation today. She did so of her own volition," Earnest told the daily briefing.
    "She recognizes, as the White House does, that the urgent challenges currently facing the Office of Personnel Management require a manager with a specialized set of skills and experiences. That's precisely why the president has accepted her resignation and assigned Beth Cobert to take on the responsibilities of the OPM director on an acting basis."
    The OPM hacks exposed personal data of more than 21 million government employees and contractors. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the office would make sure those affected by the breach get protection and support. But he went on the praise the work Archueleta has done at the agency, saying that without it, the data breach might not have been detected.
    "She also understood that cyber security at OPM needed to be a priority and it's precisely because of some of the reforms that she initiated that this particular cyber breach was detected in the first place," Earnest said.
    He said Beth Cobert, the deputy director for management at the Office of Management and Budget, will take over Archuleta's job on an interim basis.
