- Story Text: Britain's Prince George will celebrate his second birthday on Wednesday (July 22) and for a toddler he's had an eventful young life so far, travelling to Australia and New Zealand, being the darling of the world's media and welcoming a new baby sister to the royal family.
George, the third in line to the British throne, was born on July 22, 2013 amid a global media frenzy, reflecting the international popularity of his parents and ongoing fascination with the British royal family.
Prince George Alexander Louis was carried out by his proud parents to meet the press on July 23 and the crowd cheered wildly as his mother Kate handed over the bundled up baby into the arms of Prince William.
In his first interview since George's birth, William described his son as a "little bit of a rascal" who does not want to go to sleep.
On October 23, 2013, three-month-old Prince George was christened in a private low-key service at Chapel Royal inside St James's Palace.
The venue was a break with royal tradition, which normally sees high-ranking royal christenings take place in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace. The Chapel Royal was where Princess Diana's body lay before her funeral.
The royal baby began what will be the first of many travels in April 2014 when he and his parents arrived in Wellington, New Zealand for a 10-day tour.
Prince George mingled with ten other babies and their parents during his first public engagement after his christening.
The eight-month-old prince took centre stage at the Government House in Wellington as he crawled confidently and happily among other children, while his mother Kate looked on.
Prince George then travelled on to Australia with his parents.
He performed his first official duty on a visit to Taronga Zoo in Sydney and was particularly taken with a bilby.
To mark his first birthday, Kensington Palace released photographs of Prince George visiting the "Sensational Butterflies" exhibit at London's Natural History Museum, showing him walking.
In May this year, George felt the full glare of the world's media as he visited St Mary's Hospital in London where his mother had just given birth to Princess Charlotte.
George managed a few steps on his own, before reaching up to William to be carried, as he shyly waved at the cameras.
The toddler's cheeky side came out at Princess Charlotte's christening at a church on the Queen's estate in Sandringham, where George played near his sister's pram and ran away from the royal family only to be chased back by William.
He delighted crowds of well-wishers outside the church, walking hand in hand with William, as his mother pushed Charlotte in a pram. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
