  • Story Text: The Presidents of Turkey and Finland laid flowers and held a moment of silence at a makeshift memorial in Ankara on Wednesday (October 14) in memory of those killed in a double suicide bombing at the weekend.
    Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan and his wife, Emine Erdogan, greeted Finland's Sauli Niinisto and his wife, Jenni Haukio, before the group walked toward Ankara's main train station where at least 97 people were killed.
    Two bombs exploded seconds apart on Saturday (October 10), targeting a rally of pro-Kurdish activists and civic groups near Ankara's main train station, three weeks ahead of a general election.
    Erdogan and Niinisto laid red carnations at the sites of both blasts, surrounded by security services.
    Turkey's interior ministry has said it has removed the police, intelligence and security chiefs of Ankara from their posts in an effort to conduct an effective investigation into Saturday's bombings.
    The ministry, in a statement on its website late on Tuesday (October 13), did not say if the officials would to return to their posts after the investigation.
    Turkey believes an Islamic State cell from the southeastern town of Adiyaman, thought to have been behind previous attacks in the country, may have carried out the deadly attack over the weekend.
    The Ankara bombings are the worst attack of its kind in Turkish history, triggering protests against what critics of Erdogan and the government see as a major intelligence failure.
