- Story Text: The manhunt for Mexico's number 1 kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman moved into the suburbs of the Sinaloan state capital of Culiacan on Thursday (October 22), after the kingpin reportedly narrowly escaped authorities last week.
According to a local source, at least two houses in the suburb of Miguel Hidalgo in Culiacan were raided by marines.
Security forces also blocked access to streets in areas of the state capital, but authorities have not yet commented on the operations underway.
Earlier this week, local media reported that authorities searched houses belonging to Guzman's sister-in-law and his brother.
In a statement, the Mexican government has said it is working with international agencies to capture Guzman, and that in recent weeks, efforts had been focused on the northwest of the country, not far from Guzman's native turf of Sinaloa state.
According to reports, marine special forces came close to Guzman in the Durango-Sinaloa mountain region. The kingpin reportedly slipped away but sustained injuries to his face and leg whilst fleeing.
This week, the military operation against Guzman took place in at least 12 other villages that dot the Sinaloa-Durango border area.
Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, escaped from his high-security prison cell in July, reportedly through a tunnel that was dug from his cell to outside the prison, causing a major embarrassment for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
In August, the acting head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said the U.S. government believed Guzman was still in Mexico. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
